Good morning, this week are finishing the third quarter:
Writing-Students will write an essay for the Silver Pen Writing contest where they have to tell how technology impacts them. They can tell why it's great or how it can hurt us. It will be up to them to decide which stance they take. Reading-We will learn about how synthesizing new information can lead us to gaining new understanding for things we think we already know. Math-Decimals! We are moving on to decimals. This week we will see how they they relate to fractions and how to read and write them correctly. Science -We will be doing an in class project where the students will research a weather map and study two days of weather on the map to make a prediction about what the weather will be like for an area in our country.

I asked the kids before the break was anyone's parents checking the blog and a few said yes, so here's what we are doing this week in class.
LA/Writing-We will go over how to correctly punctuate quotations in a sentence. In writing we will be starting our rough draft for our informational paper this week and learn how to add transition words to our paragraphs. Reading-We will be go over how to correctly write a response to an informational book. The students will be responsible for reading a book than writing a Reading Response Journal after. They have done a pretty, good job with fiction books but writing a response for informational texts is a little different. Math-We will be working with adding and subtracting like fractions. Science-We will be discussing the process of the water cycle. Reminder that our field trip is on March 11th. Money and permission slips need to be turned in by March 1st. Welcome back! I hope everyone had a happy holiday and New Year. To begin the quarter we will be working on the following subjects this week.
Writing/Language Arts-students will learn about using transition words for their opinion writing that they are writing as well as editing and revising them to be able to write their final copy this week. Reading-We are continuing into informational reading and will look into Text Structure and how the structure of a text can help us with comprehending and finding the main idea's. Math-We will continue reviewing and learn about dividing with remainders and look into using partial quotients or the distributive property to divide large numbers. Science-We will read and discuss the differences between a food chain, a food web and an energy pyramid and what they can tell us about an ecosystem. Writing-This week we will be brainstorming ideas for our Opinion Writing essay as well as going over how to construct a thesis statement for the organization of our essay.
Reading-We will start reading Greek Mythology this week and discuss the importance of Allusions, like Herculean, Achilles Heel, etc... Math-We will begin division this week. We will take it slow at first going over how we can use basic facts to divide like 3500 divided 5, and using base-ten drawings to solve division problems. This is a good week to start working with your child on it now. I will teach them a different strategy but we will go over the way you and I did it, and still do. Science-We will be going over Ecosystems and more importantly, the differences between populations and communities as well as habitats and niche. Please, go over these vocabulary words nightly. Language Arts: We will be going over progressive verbs. These are verbs that tell when something happened (I am eating., or I was eating dinner.)
We will also start writing our opinion essays for this quarter. This year the students will write a five paragraph essay stating their opinion. Reading: We will finish up our unit on poetry by learning about similes, metaphors and idioms. We will also continue finishing the book "Love that Dog". Math: We will be working on multiplying two digit by two digit numbers this week (34 x 24=) using the area model and standard algorithm. Social Studies: We will be concluding our Social Studies unit for the quarter by reading and discussing Westward Expansion after the Revolutionary War. We will discuss how settlers conquered the natural boundaries of the west as well as how the U.S. gained new land through the Louisiana Purchase. Social Studies-We will cover the first ten amendments of the Bill of Rights. Students will create a poster that explains and illustrates an example of one of the Bill of Rights. Reading-Continue poetry and introduce Drama. Students will begin writing a script for their Gobble Up Literacy skit next week. Math-We will begin multiplying using the standard algorithm (old school way). Students will not be forced to do it, especially since they are doing so well using the area model (rectangle method). But they will be exposed this week. You can work with them on it, but I won't make them do it on the quiz on Friday. Writing-We will review past and present tense verbs today, but this week they will work on writing scripts for their skits next week. I know it may be hard for some of you, but if you can take your child with you to vote, I told them I'd give them a reward for seeing the voting process. It's perfect timing as we are discussing and learning how our government works so it would be great for them to see the process. Social Studies-This week we will continue to learn about the Constitution. We will discuss the responsibilities of the three branches of government and how checks and balances keeps them from having "too" much power. We will also do an activity dealing with the Bill of Rights.
Reading-We will be talking about the differences between poetry, prose and drama. We will begin our poetry unit on Wednesday, dealing with how poems are structured and begin reading a narrative written as a poem, called "Love that Dog". Math-We will continue multiplication, more specifically how the area model shows us the Distributive Property. We will also multiply larger numbers up to 1,000 using the area model/partial products ("rectangle method"). Writing-Students will finish their final copy of their narrative writing today. We will learn about how to build suspense to work on our next narrative which we will try and read on Halloween. Social Studies: We are switching back to Social Studies to begin the second quarter. We will start right where we left off with the problems America faced after the Revolutionary War and how the Articles of Confederation made more problems then solved. We will also talk about the Constitutional Convention and the famous people who attended.
Reading:We are going to learn what plot is in a story and how to track plot in a story through Exposition, Rising Action, Climax and Resolution. Math: This week we will finally start multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit numbers (56 x 5) through partial products or as I call it, the Rectangle Method. Writing: We will learn ways to revise our writing by adding details that SHOW and not tell the reader the story. Conference Week!!
Science-We will be finishing up the final lessons in Science, discussing how scientist compare and contrast stars. We will also learn what's out in space other than our solar system and how do astronomers study the universe. Reading-We will be learning about theme and how to find it in a story this week. Math-We will be learning how to use multiples of 10 to multiply larger numbers (200 x 7), how to round factors to check our product, and how to use models to multiply numbers. Science- We will be discussing our solar system, planets and the differences between the inner and outer planets.
Reading- We will talk about Setting and its importance to the characters and the story itself. Math- This week we will discuss multiples and how to find the factors of numbers. Also, we are going to look at determining if a number is prime or composite. Writing- We will learn what a relative adverb is and how to use them correctly in a sentence, as well as continue working on our narrative writing. The focus this week is to add strong verbs, and details to paint pictures in our readers heads. Apologies for last week. I'm not sure why it didn't post our "happenings" last week. |
